Mortal Kombat 11 Hits 8 Million Copies Sold

Mortal Kombat 11

Since its release in 2019, Mortal Kombat 11 has frequently appeared on the top ten on various monthly NPD sales charts across all platforms. Now, it’s done well enough to become the second best-selling game in the franchise, with a whopping 8 million copies sold. Over the past few years since the franchise was already rebooted, Netherrealm Studios’ take on the arcade classic has garnered praise from fans, critics and competitive players alike.

Creative Director Ed Boon initially announced the landmark sales figure via Twitter alongside a potential tease for the next DLC character for the game.

While it’s safe to assume that they’re sure to talk about the next downloadable kombatant (sorry) at some point this week, nobody at NetherRealm or WB has issued any sort of official statement on how any of their games will fare in the transition to next-generation consoles. But considering the PlayStation 5 will play most PS4 games and the Xbox Series S and X will be fully backwards compatible, it’d be surprising for them not to detail how games would fare in the transition to next-gen.

It’s been a while since the last content update for the game back in May with Mortal Kombat Aftermath, a story expansion that picked up after where the original game’s story left off. It also introduced the last new character for the game, RoboCop.

While there hasn’t been any official word on which characters will and won’t make it into the game outside of cheeky teases from Ed Boon, multiple data miners in the Mortal Kombat kommunity (I’m not actually sorry) claim that Rain, the highly-requested Mileena, and John Rambo from the Rambo movies would be entering the Mortal Kombat Tournament.
