Kindle Oasis: The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread Review

There’s one piece of tech in my daily lineup I can not live without and it’s not my phone. That device can be thrown in the ocean for all I care. Sorry mom, if you want to bug me about how to get your internet to work shoot me a carrier pigeon. No, my must-have device is my Kindle Oasis from Amazon.

I’ve been using my Kindle for around 8 months now and can confidently say this is an incredible device. I love reading physical books but they are often heavy and cumbersome to carry around and when I was travelling, ya know before the world shut down, it was so easy to just grab my Kindle and go. I have shelves upon shelves of books and I can’t believe how much I’ve turned my back on them because of this device. I’ve really shown my spine. I now have hundreds of books in the palms of my hands and my choices are unlimited. I’ll admit sometimes I spend more time swiping through my collection than I do reading but it’s crazy just how many books you can fit on this device. When travelling I used to carry 2-3 books on me which would take up valuable room as I like to pack light like most frequent flyers, but this has solved my problems.

Kindle also has daily deals, which get emailed to me every morning. These deals usually have at least 2-3 best sellers and most of the time one ends up in my shopping cart. Who can resist a good book for $1.99 (Most Kindle Daily Deals come in under $4.99). Reading is important.

There is perhaps nothing that has a greater tendency to decide favourably or unfavourably respecting a man’s future intellect, than the question whether or not he be impressed with an early taste for reading… He that loves reading, has every thing within his reach. He has but to desire; and he may possess himself of every species of wisdom to judge, and power to perform. – William Godwin

I’d highly recommend checking out these deals if you don’t already.I also suggest checking out what’s in the free public domain. There’s hundreds of great free literature in there that’s worth checking out. Another great deal is Kindle Unlimited. This gives you 10 books at a time to read at your own leisure for $9.99 a month. Once you’re done one book you can swap it for another book, and there’s plenty of good novels to choose from. I do wonder how long it will be before you can buy both the physical and Kindle version of a book on Amazon. This seems like a no-brainer and would be a feature I would use quite a bit.

Here’s the nitty gritty on the device, it’s 7-inch big with a 300 ppi display. It’s advertised as reading like a real paperback novel, but you never actually feel like you’re reading a book. I do prefer it over reading from my phone or tablet but nothing can accurately replace the feeling of reading from a physical novel. The Kindle doesn’t have that smell and feel only a book can provide. Unlike your phone or tablet it also features a no glare screen so you can read it all summer long. It’s incredibly lightweight and much easier to hold than say, a copy of Infinite Jest. You can purchase either the 8gb or 32gb model, both which will be plenty. Books usually take up a few mbs, so no worries about filling this up, no matter who you are.

My only two problems I have with the Kindle is getting to night mode should be in the drop down menu and not require me to make multiple clicks. It’s a small annoyance but it would be nice to have it as a quick option. Especially when I’m in bed and don’t wanna be greeted by an incredibly bright screen. The Kindle Oasis does have an adaptive front light, which is supposed to automatically adjust the brightness depending on your surroundings but I didn’t find it would work all of the time.

Second is the screen can be overly sensitive and I don’t find the gesture controls work all that smoothly. Highlighting text, flipping the page, and looking up the definition of a word are all done by tapping the screen but I found 70% of the time this resulted in me flipping the page. It’s not perfect, and when it works it’s great but it can certainly be fine-tuned for the next iteration.

There’s one feature I can’t tell if I like or not. It’s called Time To Read and displays in the bottom corner of the device. It lets you know how long it will take for you to finish the chapter or book depending on your reading habits. I often found it distracting and not very accurate but it would sometimes come in handy if I was on a short flight or only had a few hours in the afternoon and wanted to finish something in one sitting.

I’ve travelled on countless flights with this device, I’ve sat on Mexico beaches with it, I’ve yet to spill water on it (thankfully it is waterproof) and I can say it’s extremely durable. I’ve chucked it and dropped it (ACCIDENTALLY) and still have no problems. The battery life is absolutely insane. I charge mine on average 1 to 2 times a month and at least use it for 30 minutes every day. The only problem with battery I ever had was when I was reading under the hot sun in Mexico. The battery seemed to drain faster but that’s a pretty common occurrence with most devices. I can’t think of another device I use on a daily basis that I don’t need to charge constantly. I hope to continue to use it for reading for years to come. I’ll take the Kindle Oasis over the band Oasis any day.

With Father’s Day around the corner why not pick up a Kindle Oasis for dad alongside a few good books. Here’s my recommendations:

Education of a Wandering Man – Louis L’Amour

Man and His Symbols – Carl Gustav Jung

The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s – Andy Greene

Basquiat: A Quick Killing In Art – Phoebe Hoban

Never Split The Difference – Chris Voss
