Gearbox CEO Says PS5 And Xbox Series X Represent Biggest Generational Leap Ever

We’re now basically about a month away from the launch of a new generation of consoles. 2020 has been quite the extraordinary year for pretty much all the wrong reasons, but still, there’s hype surrounding these machines, especially as both have tried to hype up the innovations of the SSDs and how they can affect loading such as seen on the PS5 here, and the Xbox Series X here (as of now, we don’t have any direct footage for the Xbox Series S, but it also has a SSD). There’s also those that seemed to be really hyped, and I mean, really.

Speaking with Gamespot, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford sang the praises of the both systems, saying that he sees this generational leap as the most massive one he’s ever seen. He even says he thinks it’ll surpass the leap from 2D to 3D, which was probably the most revolutionary leap in most people’s minds. But he did warn the initial launch titles may not quite show that, though.

“I think customers will realize how profound of a difference it is to have the throughput capability that these new platforms bring. It’s just absolutely unreal. The leap there with PS5 and Xbox Series X is the biggest leap I have ever seen in the history of console generations. I’m saying, including the leap from 2D to 3D. It’s going to change the way we think about every bit of our experiences. However, it’s going to be hard to see that in the initial launch titles because a lot of the launch titles are games that were endeavored upon before. Frankly, there are a lot of ports, and games that have already [available] on existing platforms that are being reimagined with these new platforms.

“Still, I am super pumped about what it means for Borderlands 3 on PS5 and Xbox Series X. We’ve expanded that a lot, with the upped resolution and framerate to 4K and 60FPS, and added in four-player split-screen, which is like rendering four copies of the game at once on a single console. It’s fricking cool, man. I’m really excited for gamers that are going to get to experience Borderlands 3 on the next gen platforms. I think it’s going to be a really big moment.”

Borderlands 3 was recently confirmed to be coming to both systems and Godfall, a game published by Gearbox, is set to launch alongside the PS5. Of course, we’re still in that hype phase of the systems, and Pitchford is nothing if not a hype man, so take it as you will. Only time will tell how revolutionary the leap will ultimately be.
